Do you have some burning questions about pretzels? Your search is over! Here is everything you need to know.
What are pretzels made of?
Pretzels, like bread, can be made a number of ways. Flour (wheat or rye), yeast and water are the staple ingredients. Some recipes will call for sugar, salt and butter as well. A baking soda and water solution is also a must, as this is what gives a pretzel its golden brown colour.
Where did hot pretzels originate?
Pretzels originated in Southern Germany, and have been recorded as far back as the 12th century, almost a thousand years ago! Over the last few hundred years, the pretzel travelled across the world, and as it did, it evolved. Now we have German pretzels, American pretzels, hard mini-pretzels (like the bar snack), and Australian pretzels.

Are pretzels healthy?
Although pretzel chips are not typically healthy (no protein or fibre, and high in sodium) hot pretzels, depending on the recipe, can be considered a healthy addition to a meal, or a snack on its own. Essentially, it is bread. If topped with high protein or high fibre toppings, a pretzel is a great option for a well-rounded meal.
Are pretzels best warm or cold?
A pretzel is best fresh out of the oven, still warm. This is also the best time to add toppings or sauces.
What is the best topping for pretzels?
Pretzel salt is the classic topping for a hot pretzel. This specialty salt is crunchy and uniquely flavoured. But if you’re feeling more adventurous you can't go wrong with:
Cheese (literally any cheese, melted Brie is a personal favourite)
Pepperoni
Cinnamon sugar
Melted chocolate
Mustard
Garlic butter (yum.)

Are pretzels healthier than chips?
Chips are a highly processed snack food, and contain all sorts of nasties, whereas freshly baked pretzels are a healthier and more substantial option.
What is the secret ingredient in pretzels?
Two things make a pretzel a pretzel:
Pretzel salt - Crunchy, large salt crystals that don’t dissolve like regular table salt.
Baking soda solution (alkaline bath) - This gives the pretzel its golden colour, chewy texture, and signature flavour.

Why is it called a pretzel?
Pretzel, or ‘bretzel’ for the Germans, might have originated from a few different places, depending on who you ask. According to the Latin, “bracellae” translates to “little arms” (how cute!), whereas some think the earliest name for pretzels were “pretiolas”, which translates to “little rewards”. We like both!
What’s the difference between German and American-style pretzels?
German and American pretzels are prepared differently, and therefore taste different! German pretzels typically have a crunchy exterior and a denser dough, whereas American pretzels are softer, plump, and doughy.
